Day 79. Watch Perfect Blue, Meet with Friends, Rest Day

“Perfect Blue” is a very interesting movie. The opening scene, a continuous shot, mimics the filming technique. This movie depicts the fear of obsessive fans, sexual violence, and so on. It amplifies this fear into dual personalities and dissociation. At the same time, each character has a strong and distinct personality: from the protagonist of “Perfect Blue,” Rumi’s scene where she couldn’t bear to watch the rape scene and walked away crying, mentioning that she was also an idol before, which serves as foreshadowing leading to her believing she is Mima Kirigoe later. The movie being filmed in the story has a similar plot. Despite having only a few characters, there is a strong pull among them.

Here are some parts I found great:

• Although it’s an animation, it simulates movie-like camera techniques.
• Continuously uses different times and scenes edited together, and the first-person perspective lets us feel the fear of memory blur and personality split.
• Many hints about Rumi: she used to be an idol singer, she cried during the fake rape movie scene(the main character is an actor),
• Uses the movie to implicitly explain parts: explains personality split, explains the murderer is imagined, and projects the role onto others.
• Uses a repetitive and catchy idol theme song to create a contrast between glamor and fear.
• Uses nudity and sexual content to strongly outline emotions.

the whole movie is highly integrated. Definitely a movie that need to remembered.
