I’ve had hearing impairment in my right ear since elementary school. Growing up, my family and I often used our home phone to chat with friends. One day, I realized that while my family members could switch ears while talking on the phone, I couldn’t hear anything when using my right ear.
It wasn’t until fifth grade that I went to the hospital for an examination. The results revealed that the hearing in my right ear was completely impaired; I couldn’t hear any sound at all. However, the examination showed that the nerves in my ear were normal, and no cause for the impairment could be identified. As a result, I didn’t wear a hearing aid afterward, especially since there are different types of hearing aids, and none seemed appropriate for my situation.
What are the pros and cons of hearing impairment?
Pros:
- When sleeping, if there’s noise outside, you can try covering your right ear to significantly reduce the noise.
- If your parents are nagging at you, you can block out their words by pressing your finger against your left ear.
Cons:
- Inability to locate sound, which could pose a danger, especially in determining the direction of moving vehicles.
- Difficulty in comprehending audio-based exams, such as English listening tests.
- Inability to hear alarm clocks.
